The word LASIK means Laser-Assisted In Situ Kerotomileusis which is useful to change the shape of cornea permanently with the help of excimer laser. In this LASIK, a mechanical microkeratome (a blade like device) or a laser keratome (a laser device) is used to cut a flap in the cornea. To reveal the middle section of the cornea, the stroma, a hinge is left at one end of this flap. With the help of computer-controlled vapor, the portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced. The method epi lasik is somewhat similar to this method. This method is performed on the surface of the cornea. At the very beginning, the surface epithelium cells are lifted off, followed by laser sculpting of the cornea to correct the vision. In this method, epi-keratome is used instead of microkeratome. Suction is used to give a support like hinge. The surface of epithelium takes three days to regenerate.
